Group Presentations

Students are expected to form groups and select a topic from the below list. Presentations will be composed of four major parts; namely, (1) medical aspects of the disease, (2) psychological and psychosocial aspects of the disease, (3) a case example with treatment plan, and (4) five recent articles on the selected disease. You must submit a softcopy (e-mail or CD) of your presentation paper on your presentation day; written in APA format with a cover page and a reference section. You should also submit in your e-mail/CD research articles that you presented. Suggested information to include in your presentation is as follows:

  1. Medical Aspects: Definition, symptoms, types/patterns, and physiology of the disease, incidence/prevalence rates, etiology and risk factors, diagnosis, medical treatment.

  1. Psychological and Psychosocial Aspects: Risk factors, psychosocial impacts, patients' responses to the disease, behavioral components, issues of adherence, the role of stress and personality, psychological assessment and interventions, factors that affect the course of the disease, family issues, health care members etc.

  1. Case Example: Brief introduction to the case (demographic, medical, sociocultural, and psychological history), definition and behavioral analysis of the problem, intervention plan, strategies targeting adherence, and expected behavioral outcomes.

  1. Article presentation: Cite five recent empirical research studies related to the disease published between 2015-2017 and cited in major databases (psycinfo, medline etc.). Briefly state why you selected those specific articles, and summarize their aims, method, and major findings very briefly. What can we conclude from these studies?

Topic list: Coronary heart disease, obesity, smoking, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, cancer, chronic pain, eating disorders (bulimia nervosa/anorexia nervosa), asthma, Alzheimer's disease, substance use, Parkinson's disease, insomnia.
